Envy, the new ATI/NVIDIA driver, localisation

There are a few changes in this new release:

1) the new NVIDIA driver 100.14.23 is now available

2) the new ATI driver 8.42.3 is available, however I have to say a few things about it:

* Compiz might be a bit slow, at least on my X1600 (make sure you’re using Compiz 0.6 or higher)
* Driver 8.42.3 doesn’t support ATI Workstation cards (FireGL) therefore, if you own a FireGL card, Envy will install version 8.40.4
* As AMD admits in the release notes, version 8.42.3 doesn’t work with Debian/Ubuntu 64bit, however Envy uses a patch which fixes this problem (Thanks to Aric Cyr and Mario Limonciello)

3) Envy is now localised in the following languages: Russian, French, Finnish, German, Spanish (Spain), Spanish (Chile), Italian, Turkish, Dutch, Brazilian Portuguese, Portuguese, Austrian, Polish, Amharic (Ethiopian), Serbian, Slovak.
NOTE: only the GUI is localised. The textual installer is still in English.

4) I have modified “Envy legacy” so as to make work exactly like “Envy new” sure that I can maintain it without too much effort. As a result, localisation is available also in “Envy legacy”.

What makes open source projects rock?
It’s the amount of people passionate about it, willing to sacrifice their own spare time (or money) to contribute to open source projects.I would like to thank all the people who have helped this project with bug reports, donations, patches and translations. In other words You rock!

P.S. You can get Envy here as usual

  1. Doesn’t work for me. When installing the latest AMD64 Nvidia driver the module assistant fails on Xen sanity check. It thinks I have Xen, even though I haven’t. Default Ubuntu Linux-kernel. When I try to manually install the driver It fails on the cc sanity check :(.

  2. Never mind on my part. My desktop’s gcc segfaults every time, seems like it’s to blame…. gcc-4.2 seems to work, but that won’t help.

  3. In polish instalator the final dialog boxes (“Do you want… configure xorg.conf” & “Do you want… restart computer”) appears in english (not translated).
And what more important – Alberto, thank YOU for your work. It really kicks our … 🙂

  4. Hi! This is cool!… except that it does not work on my HD2600xt… envy doesn’t detect it and when I try to install the driver manually it gives me an error in the compilation of the driver.
The other thing is that in spanish (Chile) happens the same as what Gregg just said.
    Thanks Alberto!!!

  5. I read my previous message and i realized that the final “Thanks Alberto” sounded very srcastic.. xD. That wasn’t the intention! xD xD What I wanted to say is that even though I couldn’t install my drivers, is very cool to see how this project is evolving and that it is just great to have it on my own language!
    So, thanks a lot man!!

  6. I think I’ve found the reason why Envy doesn’t work in Russian. The locale extension in your release for Russian is written in uppercase (RU) while everything else is written in lowercase (de, cs, pt, fr etc.). Can this be the case?

  7. Alberto congratulations on this work. I intalled envy on gutsy and chose to install ati driver. when it restarted i tried to enable the compiz function but i get no composite available message. Any ideas?
    Thank you

  8. @John ploumis
the problem will be fixed in Envy’s next release (i.e. soon).

in the meantime you might want to set Composite to “Enable” in your xorg.conf

  9. I had the same problem as John Ploumis. I installed the latest ATI drivers and got the “No Composite Available” message. However, even after enabling it in Xorg.conf and restarting I still can’t enable desktop effects. It’s a different error, however. I get something more along the lines of “Desktop Effects Could Not Be Started” when composite is “Enable” instead of “Disable” in xorg.conf. I’m using an X1400 ATI PCI-E 16x 128mb.

On an unrelated note when I uninstall the ATI driver with Envy, I find I can no longer use the Restricted Driver in Ubuntu 7.10. I can choose it, and it comes up with an installation dialog as well as the terminal bit, but when I restart, it still says “Not In Use” for the restricted driver, and I get no 3D acceleration whatsoever and a slow desktop (although the resolution is correct).

  10. Ah! I forgot to mention in the last post two things.
I was mentioning in the second half of my post uninstalling the driver I installed with Envy (8.42.3)
And I have used the restricted drivers before, and know they do work properly when I install them before using Envy.

  11. when i try to install ati driver thi is the message return to me:

    envy Version 0.9.8
    Ubuntu Gutzy 32bit
your graphic card has been detected as a ATI Radeon 9250
your graphic card is supported by the legacy Driver
ENVY ERROR: ATI’s legacy driver does not support your operating system

  12. Thanks for the answer.
I changed the option to enabled. Now I get that the desktop effects cannot be enabled.

  13. When i tried to install the newest ati drivers (8.42.3) after deinstalling the old one (8.40.4). every time the old version will be installed.
When i installed the newest driver odver the installer from ati, he will be installed, but only mesa (fglrx stands in the xorg.conf).

XGL works very slow with both drivers and will shut down my kde, when i start compiz from the console.

  14. @John ploumis

Envy’s new release will fix this (which doesn’t depend on me).

    type:
    sudo nano -w /usr/bin/compiz

    put fglrx in the Whitelist

so that it looks like the following:

WHITELIST=”nvidia intel ati radeon fglrx i810″

then press CTRL+X (save the file).

    then:
    sudo nano -w /etc/X11/xorg.conf

and set Composite to “Enable” instead of “Disable”.

then press CTRL+X (save the file).

Then restart the Xserver and try Compiz again

  15. Hello Alberto, in good hour by your work. I have proven new envy with
a Ati X 850XT (AGP), and activating composite perfect one works all,
but I have proven a Ati X 800XL (PCiEx), and it is to me impossible to
activate the effects. I have proven it everything. Card AGP in screens
and two to me graphs puts drivers: fglrx and vesa. But the single PCI
puts fglrx to me and they do not men work the writing materialses. You
know because it can pass this?

It pardons my level of English I am Spanish

No tengo aceleracion 3D.

    Saludos Anak

  19. Thank you very much my friend. Until now, I tried alot to install the new driver. But only your envy takes the task. So…I’m now envy 😉

  20. On 06/12/2008 I received the same error message that cariddi discovered. With a little ‘tweaking’ I discovered that I could download the latest ATI driver from …

    https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/32bit/ati-driver-installer-8.42.3.run

As time allows, I’m gonna try to install this driver without Envy, to see if I can get the ATI Catalyst to work. This way it will be possible for me to set up the dual screen mode for Linux.

  21. Hi, i have the same problem of carriddi and ellerbe, with the exception that i am on hardy heron..
if i try the manual installation, after rebooting, i get the “low graphic mode” message and i must reboot in safemode and repari the xorg.conf
it’s about a week that i’m trying to install drivers for my ati radeon 9200, i thought that EnvyNg was the right mode..but i’m loosing hope..:(

  22. @Ellerbe, Max
ATI 9000 and 9250 work only with the open source “ati” driver. The proprietary driver no longer supports your cards.

  23. oh yes..sorry, i’ve just read it in one of your responses in this blog.
of course i’ve already followed a lot of guides, but it seems to be no chance for me..
    Anyway..Thank You
