NVIDIA driver 173.14.05 in hardy-proposed

Today, I’ve uploaded the latest release of the NVIDIA driver (173.14.05) to the the hardy-proposed repository (you should thank the Ubuntu-SRU and the MOTU-SRU teams for this). This is the bugreport containing the request for a SRU (Stable Release Update). Please test the new driver and post your comments there so that we know whether the driver works well for you too, and if it does, the update will be moved to the stable repository.

NOTE: this update won’t affect Ubuntu’s official linux-restricted-modules but only the linux-restricted-modules-envy so that nothing will break if you use the former.

Instructions:
All you have to do in order to test the new driver is enable the hardy-proposed repositories, refresh your list of packages and:
1) if you have already installed the driver through EnvyNG you should receive an update through Update manager
2) otherwise you will have to install and launch EnvyNG and select the “Manual selection of the driver” (since I haven’t had the time to update EnvyNG’s compatibility list for the automatic detection).

News:
I promised that I would blog about the projects I was assigned at the UDS and here’s the first news: I’ll maintain the NVIDIA driver for Ubuntu Intrepid together with Timo Aaltonen while Mario Limonciello will take care of the ATI (fglrx) driver. We’ll use DKMS for both drivers.

Stay tuned for more news and please help us testing the driver.

P.S. I’m working on the latest ATI driver too

  1. The 32 bit is there now I installed just fine. I saw one warning that said something about a sanity check could not be preformed because there were multiple nvidia.ko’s in my kernel 2.6.24.19. however looks lie the install worked. it also looks like the new driver fixed a problem I have been having with corruption for over a year now !!! hurray ! the new driver works and fixes problems.

  2. 64bit runs just fine. I added comments to your link as per your request. This new driver solves some irritating corruption issues I have been having. Also, I used your proposed new envy-core and envy-gtk to install the drivers, I se no issues from envy either.

so the latest and greatest envy and nvidia driver works flawless on both 32bit and 64bit.

  3. Doesn’t work at all for me. Uninstalled the previous driver and installed 173.14.05. Now the X-server won’t start anymore.

    Nvidia 6600 Go (MSI Laptop)

  4. Lovely, I’ll get this installed on my laptop as soon as I get home (I’m at moment using my Macbook with Ubuntu Hardy – it suspend flawlessly) – hope the closed source driver update improve the suspend bug on the Dell laptop at home – it suspend most of the time, but once in a while (too often for my liking) it’ll just fail – ie open up to a blank screen and I have no choice but to powercycle.

I blame the driver for this – since my Macbook – all opensource hardware driver apart from WiFi and it suspend wonderfully just like it does with OSX (apart from the fact that OSX use suspend and hibernate at the same time).

    Thanks for the work anyhow.

  5. Just installed the driver on my lappy (Compal HEL80 with an Nvidia 7600go).

The 3D “flickering” bug I’ve had since I first installed Ubuntu seems to be gone… at least when starting up Compiz. The driver also seems to have improved 3D performance by a bit (~5% in glxgears).

    I give it a 10/10 =)

  6. Does not work for me. But after a few seconds i get a white screen .

  7. hi ppl, this envy is really great 🙂 wanted to try it on my machine ubuntu hardy 32 bit with 8400gs, but can’t get the new driver, also when i start envy and want to do manual select i just see the old driver not the new one, i’m using dutch repositories, where can i get this one? thx in advance 🙂

  8. ok figured it out, for ppl who also had the same problem u have to go to system–>administration–>software sources then click on the “updates” tab and check the “pre releaed updates” then u will have the new driver in envy 🙂

  9. Hi, thanks for the great app, have been using it since migrating over to Ubuntu (in 6.10). Have a problem with the latest driver(173.14) though, during start-up (before login screen) it will inform that the resolution has been bumped down to a maximum of 800×600. Reinstalled Ubuntu 8.04 and the previous driver(169.12) and it works brilliantly. Then i upgraded to 173.14 and its the same problem again. Tried changing the xorg.conf to the 169.12 xorg.conf file and it doesn’t work at all. Hardware: Toshiba M30, GeForce Go FX5200. Thanks for the help. =)

  10. I have the latest driver(173.14) working on two machines both have the nvidia 8400gs video card and both run ubuntu hardy 8.04 one is a 32 bit machine and the other is a 64 bit machine. works fine on both, only thing is that tv-out cuts off a little bit from the top and the bottom of the desktop, so you can not really use the taskbars… (anyone else has the same problem and found a solution?) for rest it is fine 🙂 Gracie mile for the great work alberto 🙂

  11. Yeah, I’d say just replace the one in Proposed with 173.14.09 if it hasn’t already been done, seems to be essentially the same thing, just with fixes. o_O
What’s with NVidia giving us attention all of a sudden? :p

  12. I see that nvidia driver must come before ati.
    Release Highlights
    * Added support for the following new GPUs:
    o GeForce GTX 260
    o GeForce GTX 280

For ubuntu to prosper we can’t hang behind other :=)

  13. got the driver loaded but had to tell xorg to use “nv” rather than “nvidia” as I got not video through the DVI connection on my 9600gt.

any thoughts? using ProView 22 wide screen.

  14. alberto,
I’m wondering if the legacy app is going to be updated ? I know you are busy with getting ATI out and now the newest 177 nvidia stuff, but I’m not seeing anything about legacy envy updates…

  15. Hey Alberto,
first of all thanks for all your hard work.
Secondly, I’ve received a notebook with an NVidia video card (previously I had an ATI) and I’ve noticed that when enlarging windows from the panel with Compiz enabled there is some flickering in the window. Is it a known bug?
I have the 8400 GS video card on AMD64 ubuntu. I’ve installed through EnvyNG version: 1.1.1

    Thanks a lot,

    Giorgio

  16. Hi Alberto,
I have a Sony Vaio from the fz series with a nvidia card (8400GT), as many people know there are currently no solutions to controlling the brightness of the panel and my eyes are hurting.
Do you know anything about the state of this situation ?

Sorry for the bother 😛 Cumps

  17. Thank you Alberto for Envy 🙂

Will nvidia driver 173.14.05 out of-the-box identify screensize? With the actual driver 169.09 it was not possible and needed some “bricolage” from my side.

    Sony Vaio VGN-FE11S, GeForce 7400go (Screen 1280×800). Kubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy), KDE 3.5.8, Kernel 2.6.22-15

  18. Envy’s advantage was offering for the latest graphic card drivers in a simple and preconfigured way. ATI is two releases ahead for now. Linux users profit much from the new releases.
Sorry, but I want Envy legacy back with Updates on time.

  19. I can only agree with Roland. Envy is still using 8.3, while Ati is up to 8.6.

Please update to the newest 🙂

  20. ciao alberto, i have a problem with envyng, i have a geforce2 mx 400 and ive installed the 169.12 driver, but after 10 secs or less the whole ubuntu crash, the mouse pointer doesnt do anything the only thing left to do is the reset buttom, what should i do? im new in the ubuntu/linux world. gracias. Ricardo.

  21. Alberto:

First of all thx for such great script to avoid lazy ones like me to compile Nvidia for our specific kernel.

Lateley I’ve been having great issues with Nvidia drivers and most fullscreen gl games and appz. They give me out of sync errors. I have tried almost all drivers and none seem to work. I never had this issue in past ubuntus.

Currently Ubuntu Hardy with Nvidia GE Force 6200

I think it has something to do with this new xorg

I already filed bug report about this but just don’t seem to get an answer, maybe you can help or point me to right direction?

    Thanks.

  22. Dear Alberto,
I’m testing these in an AMD64 setup right now. My impression is that they are quickier than the “official glx-new” ones. Hope is not just placebo.
Besides, I’ve just enabled the hardy-proposed repos and selected nvidia-glx-new-envy package (which has told me to remove nvidia-glx-new) and after a reboot it has worked out of the box :)))
The only minor issue is that during the reboot process, the Xserver is killed and restarted and fails because initialization of restricted-drivers stuff has not taken effect at the moment, but besides a warning telling the machine is working in low-quaility mode or something alike, after the reboot everything works just fine.
Finally, I tweaked the NVreg_RegistryDwords=”PerfLevelSrc=0x2222″ option which seems to be working as well.

  23. The driver works ok for me, but everytime I do an UBUNTU update, I lose the driver and have to re-install. After I do a manual selection of the new driver, it is ok. If I do anything else I am limited to 800×640 resolution because I have reverted to a generic driver.
