As promised, NVIDIA drivers 71.86.07 and 96.43.09 are now available for testing in Intrepid’s proposed repositories. If you don’t know how to use these repositories you can read the instructions.
Please give feedback here (say something like “driver 96 works for me”, etc.).
There is also a small fix which will solve a problem with diversions for drivers 177 and 173.

I have also fixed a bug in nvidia-settings (i.e. NVIDIA’s control panel) which made it segfault when no ServerLayout section is available in the xorg.conf.
Please test the package and give feedback here.
The sooner you test these packages, the sooner they will enter Intrepid’s stable repositories.
Thanks for the update! Which packages are you referring to exactly ? I activated proposed this morning and can’t see any updateto jockey or nvidia.
Fabian: nvidia-glx-96 and nvidia-glx-71. They won’t show up in Jockey (since they are still blacklisted).

I have just installed 8.10 fresh (not upgrade). I have an Nvidia 7600GT card. When I try to install drivers via restricted drivers menu, it hangs forever in downloading stage. When I list packages with “nvidia” I see some 173 and 177 but they are “modaliases” entries only. Should I go ahead and install via envy?
Thanks for getting those packages made, Alberto. I’ve got some Compiz effects running on my 96-compatible GeForce2 MX 100/200 video card, with the only thing crashing Compiz/Emerald is my enabling the rotating cube effect in ccsm. But I’m able to use the Desktop Zoom again, which was sorely missed.

I’ve found a very interesting bug upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10… The drivers for the nvidia video card are not compiled well because Kubuntu still load kernel 2.6.24-… instead 2.6.27-…!!! so the driver manager doesn’t install the drivers..
The 71.86.07 beta has no X.Org 1.5 support, yet(?).

96 works but still with few problems. I can’t get desktop shortcuts’ text to be displayed, and Compiz doesn’t work (animations work but textures don’t render, so when I switch between desktops for ex. I got a white square). Finally, Emerald doesn’t work at all.
I’m using Xubuntu 8.10 with a GeForce 4 Go 440 64Mo.

worked well with 96 driver in Hardy
Does not work for me in Ibex as of last night.
I cannot use the newer drivers because my monitor has corrupt edid data.
It seems like 71, 96, 173 and 177 work with the nv driver in xorg.conf. But none work w/ the nvidia driver in xorg.conf.
What is the difference between the nv and nvidia driver setting in xorg.conf?
H/W: HP dv2500t laptop w/ nVidia Corporation GeForce 8400M GS (rev a1) video card.
O/S: Ubuntu/Xubuntu 8.10
96 works with GeForce 4 MX4000. Having problems because when I enable effects my title bars disappear and terminal is white text on white background, but I’m sure that’s a problem with Compiz.
A note, though, I had to sudo apt-get purge nvidia-glx-96 and then sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-96 to get it to work. It didn’t tell me there was a new version after I enabled the -proposed repository. I had to remove it and reinstall, then restart X.

I am running Xubuntu 8.10 (fresh installation) and Riva TNT2 M64. I have successfully installed envyng, it selected the right module (71.86.04), but after reboot the dkms installation process failed and X didn’t start, because envyng switched the configuration to nvidia, but no kernel module was built.
I tried to understand why it failed to build the module and ran

Here is the make.log: http://pastebin.com/m3bc2c249 … it fails because of unnecessary asm/semaphore.h inclusion in nv-linux.h. But if I remove it, it goes few steps further and fails on the wrong argument count for some SMP function.
To make the long story short, the driver bundled in your package just does not compile with the latest kernel. Could you please help me to get in touch with the right people to fix it? I can help you with testing but I am unfamiliar to the dev process, so I don’t know where I should report this issue.

OK, I’ve realised I’m getting 71.86.04 instead of 71.86.07, because it has been removed from proposed. Waiting for the situation to resolve.

First of all, thanks a lot, Alberto!
I’m using 96.43.09 and it’s working for me after some problems I encountered.
First gnome was not willing to recognize this driver in it’s proprietary hardware management.
Solution:
– start compiz from a console
– it will fail but it won’t quit which is good
– open System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers
– there should be an entry now matching your card/driver
– uninstall, then reinstall it
– then kill compiz
– from now on the driver shall be listed and used
The second problem was with compiz. ATM I have to start compiz with this line:
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libGL.so.1
compiz –replace –indirect-rendering –strict-binding decoration
I will play around with gnome’s own *Appearance* and startup settings now, since I don’t understand, why libGL isn’t always loaded.
For those of you using avant-window-navigator: I had to link an the newer version of libffi to as an older one in order for awn to work properly. May be it’s only me who had to do this, but if not here’s, how you do it::
/usr/lib$ sudo ln -s libffi.so.5 libffi.so.4

96.43.09 NVidia driver works with my Geforce2 400 MX but openoffice3 on Ubuntu 8.10 does too radical anti-aliasing with compositing enabled under metacity. In xfwm4 the same: when I turn on anti-aliasing fonts in oo3 interface disapear.

Have you tried it with compiz? I got a GeForce2 MX/MX 400 card but unable to turn on the desktop effect with the default driver. I like to know if the 96.43.09 driver have resolved this.

After a ubuntu 8.10 clean install over my amd64 + gforce7800 (2 in sli), i did:
Install 177 from the official repositories, reboot and blank screen
Install 173 (in tty1, tty7 dont work, doh), reboot and blank screen
Same with your 96: Blank screen (tty7)
And with your 71, now is capable to show my desktop, but there are not nvidia detected, so i cant use “Nvidia Servers Settings” or compiz or use the tool System->Administration->Hardware Controller to detect my graphic card.
But at least now I can use gdm.
Should I wait for official updates or are there any easy tweaking solution?

Hi! I have the same problem that siafok. When I turn on antialiasing fonts in Ooo 3 the text of menu interface disapears. I Have a Geforce 4. Compiz work fine. Thanks for help.
For me, 71.86.07 isn’t visible in the repository, after updating, still I only can see the 71.86.04 🙁

I have nvidia GeForce2 MX/MX 400, so I have to use nvidia-glx-96 driver, namely 96.43.09 version of the driver. I have noticed that this driver has problem with fonts rendering. For instance, to get characters displayed in oo3 and oo2.4 I had to turn off fonts rendering. Also I have problems with characters in wine applications, there are no characters at all, in menu, in submenu… But if i change nvidia to nv driver in xorg.conf everything works perfect. Also I had problems with choosing roght options forn nvidia driver, default (with clean xorg.conf doesn’t work), and finally I have found my old xorg.conf in backups and it works good except of fonts. If somebody has the same configuration I can share my xorg.conf

Driver 96.43.09 works with my GeForce2 MX/MX 400 card. The only problem I have now is whenever I enabled visual effects, the window border keep disappearing. Anyone have a solution?

Alberto – I’m just wondering if the 180.06 drivers will become available for Hardy and Intrepid at some point.
Also – Do you foresee the future ability to install ATI proprietary drivers for Intrepid on the systems (i.e. ati mobility 9600) where they quit working with the Intrepid release (but worked perfectly fine in Hardy)?

I am using 96.43.09. It works fine except that the Chinese fonts are displayed clearly. It might be something with the driver. I older driver does not have the same problem, and I switch back to nv under intrepid. Waiting for the release version of Nvidia driver, hopefully they can fix it.

I am quite a newbie to Linux and have a question/problem. Sorry for the long post, hope to get an answer nonetheless.
Problem: Fresh Kubuntu 8.10 installation running fine, but graphic desktop effects sluggish (Lenovo T61 Laptop, Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M). EnvyNG shows the installed driver 177.80-0Ubuntu2. I enabled the proposed repositories, hoping I would get the newest graphic drivers. There were some dependency problems during the update/install process in adept, which I don’t recall. I think the new driver was added, because desktop effects were much smoother, but maybe installed KDE 4.2beta as well. After rebooting computer I had very frequent crashes so that I now reinstalled Kubuntu.
My question: is there a “safe” way to get the newest drivers? Nvniews.net says that 177.82 is the latest stable, and people report good experiences. How can I install that through the repositories without major risks?

I am trying to run UBUNTU 8.10 64bit on AMD 64 4600+ with nvidia 7600GS and onboard 6100 for three 1024X768 res monitors. I’ve tried all three drivers 177 173 & 96 and each time I’ve had to reinstall OS to get passed a Checking Battery State. On fresh install I get one monitor at correct res but as soon as I activate propriatary driver I am asked to reboot for nvidia driver and again I get stuck at Checking Battery State. Please help, any advice is greatly welcome & appreciated.
