This morning I had a look at Distrowatch.com as usual and I noticed that Linux Mint 2.1 “Bea” beta 023 was released.

I was curious to see what this “customised version of Ubuntu” was like, therefore I read the release notes.

Then I find out that Envy is included in this beta release of Linux Mint:

And a few surprises…

For those of you who have nvidia cards there’s a little surprise in Bea called envy. And for those of you who like playing with the terminal, we put a little surprise in there too :)

That is a great surprise (at least for me ;) )

Linux Mint is the biggest GPL violation ever !

    Care to explain why?

Envy does not violate GPL in any way, therefore Linux Mint does not violate GPL because of envy.

i never said that envy is a gpl breackage.

I’m convinced that the GPL does not allow a gpl software to be distribute with proprietary module.

Some are calling this “grey area” of the GPL.

Indeed envy is a cool project =)

Envy does not include the Nvidia driver.

(ONLY) If you run it envy will download and install the driver for you.

Therefore including envy in a distro is different from including proprietary drivers. That’s why envy was chosen (rather than the linux-restricted-modules which *do* contain proprietary drivers).

even if not according to law, its the same thing except you use semantics as an argument. quit kidding yourself. I hope this software at least makes users aware when there are bugs that they should not be directed toward kernel developers, otherwise this software wastes alot of good people’s time.

I have no idea of what you’re talking about.

You should try Envy and see what it is.

    i’m not speaking about envy
But the dozen of other proprietary modules shipped with Linux Mint

But again Envy is a cool project =)
