Envy 0.9.5-0ubuntu1 STABLE is now available

Envy 0.9.5 is now marked as stable. I have removed version 0.9.4.

Here is the changelog:

* Fixed: the API mismatch should no longer occur since the nvidia modules in
/lib/modules/`uname -r`/volatile/ are now removed
* Added: Nvidia driver 100.14.09
* Removed: Nvidia beta driver 100.14.03
* Added: ATI driver 8.37.6
* Removed: ATI driver 8.36.5

As you can see, both ATI and the Nvidia driver are up-to-date, moreover the nasty API mismatch problem should no longer be such.

Please, remember to remove your previous release of Envy before you install this new release:
sudo apt-get --purge remove envy

You can get Envy here as usual.

You might also want to have a look at the instructions for Debian or for Ubuntu

  1. Thanks for your development efforts.

But, I have tried to install Ubuntu 7.04 and then use Envy to install the ATI drivers. No luck at all. I just get a black screen after rebooting. I have a Radeon 9550 card.

After installing and uninstalling Ubuntu four times it looks like it is back to Windows for me…

  2. @Dave
there’s no need to reinstall Ubuntu every time you get a blank screen.

Boot in Recovery Mode (select it from the GRUB menu)

    type:
    cd /etc/X11/

    ls

    you’ll see xorg.conf and other backup files (e.g. xorg.conf_backup_200703022015)

    replace xorg.conf with a backup:
    sudo cp name_of_your_backup_file xorg.conf

    then reboot by typing:
    reboot

Then, if you want, you can help me to diagnose the error.

  3. Thank you Alberto. I was able to get back the basic GUI by restoring the backup config file. any furhterhelp diagnosing the problem would be appreciated.

  4. @Dave

Ok, let’s try to diagnose the error:

Boot with the “ati” driver in your xorg.conf

Then (after Ubuntu has booted) Set the driver to “fglrx” in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    Log out and Press CTRL+ALT+F1

You will get to the command line (no GUI)
    Type:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop (if you use GDM)
    OR
sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop (if you use KDM)

    Then:
    startx — -verbose 5 -logverbose 5

You will see several lines with the same error.

Then if you can’t get to the command line press CTRL+ALT+F1 or CTRL+C (select NO if it asks you if you want to see the output of the error or something like that)

Then type this in order to copy the output of the error to your home folder:
    sudo cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log /home/your_username/Xorg.0.log
(Of course you have to replace “your_username” with your username)

Access the GNOME or KDE again in the following way:
    sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Set the driver back to “ati” instead of “fglrx”
    CTRL+O to save
    CTRL+X to exit

    Then
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart (if you use GDM)
    OR
sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart (if you use KDM)

Post the content of that file (which you can find under /home/your_username/Xorg.0.log )

(if something goes wrong you will have to restore your xorg.conf backup, just like before).

P.S. I have an exam tomorrow, therefore I won’t be able to help you today.

    Regards

  5. Alberto,

Thanks for your help. Please find the log below.

Also, all the best in your exam tomorrow !!

  6. Hi:

I dont understand, but when I try to use the most recent nvidia driver I loose my openGL, it does not show in the nvidia settings, but if I use the 9631, it work perfectly, any ideas?

    Grazie

  7. Hi Alberto,

I’ve tried evny 0.9.5 and was able to install the ATI drivers, however when I reboot my laptop the resolution was messed up and distorted.

I am using ATI FIREGL v5200 and the highest resolution supported is 1900×1200.

I would apprecaite if you can help me with this issue.

    Thanks,

  8. hi,
just tried the latest envy, with no previous drivers, on 64bit ubuntu.

i get this message when starting up
    ‘failed to start x server’

‘error: Microcode bcm43xx_microcode5.fw not availble or load failed’

It doesn’t even reach the normal interface, It’s in terminal i think. I tried removing it, through some instructions I read off your blog.

sorry I am new to linux,
I did remove envy, and the unrequired ‘things’ it also told me about. both through the command interface, but it still has the same error.

  9. Hey, I tried using Envy and ran into some problems. I have a Geforce 6800XT, but with “nvidia” in on xorg.conf, it didn’t want to work. Can you help me get my system running smoothly now please? I had to change the setting to “vesa” instead of “nvidia” –and that took me forever to figure out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  10. @Jay
when something goes wrong you can follow these steps:

Boot in Recovery Mode (select it from the GRUB menu)

    type:
    cd /etc/X11/
    ls
    you’ll see xorg.conf and other backup files (e.g. xorg.conf_backup_200703022015)

    replace xorg.conf with a backup:
    sudo cp name_of_your_backup_file xorg.conf

    then reboot by typing:
    reboot

If you want to help me diagnose the problem you should follow these steps:

    1) post your /var/log/envy-installer.log

    2) Boot with the “nv” driver in your xorg.conf

Then (after Ubuntu has booted) Set the driver to “nvidia” in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    Log out and Press CTRL+ALT+F1

You will get to the command line (no GUI)
    Type:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop (if you use GDM)
    OR
sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop (if you use KDM)

    Then:
    startx — -verbose 5 -logverbose 5

You will see several lines with the same error.

Then if you can’t get to the command line press CTRL+ALT+F1 or CTRL+C (select NO if it asks you if you want to see the output of the error or something like that)

Then type this in order to copy the output of the error to your home folder:
    sudo cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log /home/your_username/Xorg.0.log
(Of course you have to replace “your_username” with your username)

Access the GNOME or KDE again in the following way:
    sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Set the driver back to “nv” instead of “nvidia”
    CTRL+O to save
    CTRL+X to exit

    Then
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart (if you use GDM)
    OR
sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart (if you use KDM)

Post the content of that file (which you can find under /home/your_username/Xorg.0.log )

(if something goes wrong you will have to restore your xorg.conf backup, just like before).
