A new release of Envy is available. Here’s the changelog:
* Added: Nvidia driver 169.07
* Removed: Nvidia driver 100.14.23
* Added: AMD Catalyst driver 7.12
* Removed: AMD Catalyst driver 7.11
ATI’s Catalyst driver 7.12 uses DKMS (thanks to Mario Limonciello), and I’m planning to add DKMS to the NVIDIA driver in Envy’s next release (0.9.10) (as well as other cool features). Thanks to DKMS you won’t have to reinstall the driver every time the kernel is updated.
Make sure you read the Release Notes and (especially) the Known issues of both the ATI and the NVIDIA driver before you install any of these drivers.
You can get the driver here.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year or, if you’re not a Christian, I simply wish you a good time 😉
EDIT: if you need Envy’s previous release you can get it here:

Envy Legacy
Thanks so much for getting these releases out so fast!!! I, and a lot of other people, appreciate it a _ton_!
Good Job, Alberto. I appreciate your efforts on URandR and Envy. Thank you!
I want to know the answer to the following question:
When new version of Envy came out, should I uninstall the ati fglrx driver(preinstalled and active) using old Envy? Or just install new version of Envy and install new fglrx driver(without uninstall fglrx driver)?
I wish you make it clear by writing instruction on this at Envy page. Just a Wish 🙂
@Gazrang
Both ways are ok.
Thanks Alberto for the nice job you’re doing with Envy.
I am from KSA and people don’t celebrate Christmas here but, still because of your awareness of this fact I was taken into consideration when reading your blog 🙂
Thank you,
Ali
ty Alberto great job!!
Thanks always for providing such an easy way to install our graphics drivers! Unfortunately, with the new release I’m once more unable to access desktop effects with my X1400 ATI in Linux Mint. It’s a completely fresh install.
HMMM…I haven’t had a chance to check a game yet, but I lost ~2000 FPS in glxgears with the update…
Hello,
many thx for envy. The new Ati driver works with Firegl products but envy still downloads the 8.40. Is it normal ? I have a mobility firegl 5200 and on the ati website, for this card, I can download the 7.12.
Thanks.
I ran into problems with the latest release. running a stock dell vostro 200 with an nVidia Corporation GeForce 8300 GS (rev a1) with ubuntu gutsy.
X would start, even got login sounds, and could login blind. but no screen. Nothing obvious in the logs. I reverted back to envy_0.9.9-0ubuntu2_all.deb which was luckily still hosted and all was well.
cheers
jamie
@PoZZyX
you’re right, however the desktop effects won’t work which certain firegl cards. Furthermore you can install that driver manually through Envy.
@Tyler B
what does this command say?
glxinfo | grep direct
@jamie
maybe you should ask here:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=14
@Jayson Rowe
1) with which driver?
2) what does this command say?
glxinfo | grep direct
Hi Alberto,
thx for you work on the envy stuff…I installed it just now, and I’m not able to initialize the compiz extensions anymore…
compiz –replace tells me something about not whitelisted drivers…
any clue?

sh

Tank you for your help
@albertomilone
“glxinfo | grep direct” Displays “direct rendering: Yes”.
Hi Alberto,thanks for this new release!
I have installed the new ati driver with envy and I have now the same problem pierluc is having. Any suggestion?
@pierluc, Tapia, Tyler B:
can you send me your /usr/bin/compiz via email?
@luigi:
mi puoi inviare il tuo /usr/bin/compiz via email?
@albertomilone:
C’est fait, check your email
Hello,
Couple of questions for you. I installed the Alpha1 release of Ubuntu Hardy Heron. Do you have a version that I could use on Hardy? Also, if I upgrade my installation through the Synaptic update notifications will I still have to uninstall and reinstall Envy?
Thanks!!
Robert
@albertomilone:
There was more than one file with “Compiz” in the name, so I sent all 3. They should show up soon in your e-mail! Thanks for all the help. 😀
Same as for others, the latest release gives me problems:
“Desktop effects could not be enabled”
nvidia-settings says I’m not running nvidia X server, nothing changes enabling restricted drivers.
– nVidia GeForce 6200
– Ubuntu 7.10
Reverted to previous version of Envy (end therefore previous drivers), everything works fine.
Ancora buone feste
Ciao Alberto,innanzitutto buone feste!
Grazie ancora!
Seems that envy is making changes to the /usr/bin/compiz file, and in my case the changes were causing compiz not to work. To fix it I changed:
COMPIZ_BIN_PATH=”/usr/local/bin/” # For window decorators and compiz
PLUGIN_PATH=”/usr/local/lib/compiz/”
to
COMPIZ_BIN_PATH=”/usr/bin/” # For window decorators and compiz
PLUGIN_PATH=”/usr/lib/compiz/”
and
COMPIZ_NAME=”compiz”
to
COMPIZ_NAME=”compiz.real”
Now it works, but I hope I won’t heed to keep making this change every time I run envy.
@Aaron
thanks for reporting the errors. You’re right but what’s worse is that I don’t know how/why those errors ended up in Envy’s file.
I’ll release a fix tomorrow (it’s 00:36 AM here).
@All
I hope this solves your problems with Compiz 😉
you’re my favorite man!!!!
thanks for everthing… you are still human, and i wish i could do as well something so gorgoeus…;)
happy new year!
keep on 😉

@all
I have just released Envy 0.9.9-0ubuntu4 .
Let me know if it solves the problem with Compiz
tak-you, I test it right now
Tank-you, I will test it right now
I think I will have problems when I will restart my computer because the install have stop after the step when Envy check If compiz is ok.
– He said that he found a backup end he stop. I do not configure Xorg and he do not give me the window to restarte my computer.
@pierluc
type:
sudo envy –uninstall-all
and then install the driver again
ok, no probel when I restart the computer but the driver Catalyst 7.12 was aleready install.
Okay I already installed the newest driver using envy_0.9.9-0ubuntu3_all (nvidia) but my compiz is working properly and I also have the same incorrect lines that Aaron has mentioned. Should I change to the newest envy and reinstall?
thanks
@pierluc
no problem
@STx
Envy 0.9.9-0ubuntu4 is the latest version (not 0.9.9-0ubuntu3) .
Just installed the newest 0.9.9.4
Regretfully I have the same problem I had before: “Desktop effects could not be enabled”
Here’s my logs:

Will revert to Envy 0.9.9.2 until problem is solved.
@Fra
Can you send me your /var/log/Xorg.0.log and your /var/log/envy-installer.log (via email)?
“@STx
Envy 0.9.9-0ubuntu4 is the latest version (not 0.9.9-0ubuntu3) .”
Okay, but compiz is working properly for me with the drivers i installed using 0.9.9-0ubuntu3 even though I have the same lines in /usr/bin/compiz file that Aaron had before changing them. Do you think I should still reinstall the latest driver by first installing newest envy?
thanks
Thank you for everything.
Happy new year!
@STx
if you want to install the latest driver with the latest version of Envy, just type:
sudo envy –uninstall-all
and then install the new driver
@MS
I would like to ajust the gamma of my lcd screen with an other software than amd catalyst control center like gammapage:
http://www.pcbypaul.com/software/GAMMApage.html
But, when I move the cursor of the gamma the top of my screen become to flicker during 2 or 3 seconds (in french it’s scintiller) but the color do not change. I can take the color to the maximum gamma and it do not change any things.
Why it do not work good?
And, On Windows it have software who gives the possibility to set the brightness and contrast (black and wight gamma point). Is it possible to do the same thing on linux?
sorry wight = white

Please note this bug for some nVidia cards and fan problems (full speed)
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=104713
8800 users are trapped and must use the beta version 169.04 and
a manual install….
On my system, ubuntu gutsy with nvidia geforce go6200, the last version of envy to work is: envy_0.9.9-0ubuntu2_all.deb.
The later versions will install the driver correctly, but upon reboot, I get the vesa driver selected for me, and changing it to nvidia is of no help. It’s a catch 22 type of thing.
Anybody has the same?
Note: I have been able to install manually (without envy) the latest nvidia driver from the official web site. I followed the instructions found here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaManual
Of course, that defeats the purpose of using Envy, but it would be nice to use envy anyway as it is handy after a kernel or mesa update.
@pierluc
I live in Italy 😉
@plun
I’ll see what I can do
@Daniel
“Bullet proof X” sets the driver to “vesa” if the Xserver fails to start. I need to see the /var/Xorg.0.log however, if “Bullet proof X” does so, I can’t access a useful /var/Xorg.0.log. This is a catch 22.
Maybe you could uninstall the driver as described in point B of this page:
http://albertomilone.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php?n=Main.Envy-InstructionsForUbuntu
then use Envy again and let Safe mode start. Get the /var/Xorg.0.log.old (yes “.old”) and save it somewhere so that you can send me the file later.
Alberto, sorry for taking so long to get back to you – I just now thought to come check back.
I have tried re-installing since then, I installed ‘envy_0.9.9-0ubuntu4_all’ and I’m running a GeForce 7900GS…
I dropped down to ~13000fps in glxgears from ~16000.
jaysonr@homer:~$ glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes
It’s no biggie, as I don’t game much anymore, but also as a side note, textures are messed up in UT2004…The menu screens which are normally blue are now white, and in game any lighting shows up as square boxes made up of lines (looks kinda like venitian blinds at a window rather than lights…
Anything else I can check? thanks – feel free to email me at my email address.
Thanks so much for all you do!
@Jayson
I think you should ask here:

Ciao Alberto,
@cordetese
avvia in Recovery mode e digita:
depmod -ae
poi:
reboot
e avvia normalmente
@cordetese
avvia in Recovery mode e digita:
envy --uninstall-all
poi:
reboot
e avvia normalmente
Hello Alberto,
Thanks a lot for Envy, it helps me a lot of times.
I’m not able to instal the “nvidia.run” whithout Envy an that’s THE problem because today the last drivers (167.07) are bugged. The graphic card fan run at maximum… I have a GF 8800 GTS, it sounds like a turbine…
So, is it possible to use Envy an force it not to instal the latest drivers?
Thanks for your help
@chris_k
read where it says “EDIT: if you need Envy’s previous release you can get it here:”
and install Envy’s previous release
Alberto,
I just built a Debian/sid box, and HP laptop with a Radeon Mobility M300. I installed dkms (which I got from Dell’s site) and envy and finally got envy to run. However, when I tried to install the ATI driver, envy gave me

python pulse.py ati
[riogrande /usr/share/envy]# python pulse.py ati

I got envy fixed, but each time I try to install on my sid installation, I get a number of errors when I try to build the packages, either through Envy or doing an ati*.run –buildpkg Debian/sid:

@Brad Alexander
it might have to do with ATI’s packaging scripts for Debian Sid. Maybe you should ask ATI about this
@alberto
I will contact them, however, I tried building as Debian/lenny and Debian/etch and got the same result. I also tried building 8.42.3, which I had built successfully under Ubuntu/Gutsy on the same hardware. That made me think that I might have something missing after rebuilding with Debian.
Grazie! I was able to install the latest nVidia driver for my Go7900GS and enable desktop effects in ubuntu with your program’s help, and I’m fairly inexperienced with linux and ubuntu in partibular. Thank you for doing all this work. Happy new year!
Hello!
I wish u an happy new year 😉
Thanks for helping me about the instal of the older envy version to avoid the bug of fan gpu.
@+
Thank you very much for your very useful tool.
Since catalyst 7.12 has issues I would like to install catalyst 8.42.3 but the new envy only propose 7.12 / 8.40.4 / 8.28.8. Do you have a link to the envy version that support catalyst 8.42.3 ?
Thanks in advance,
Leo

Hi all,
@Brad Alexander: did you get any reply from ATI? I got the same error as you and this page and an hungarian one are the only pages google finds when searching for excerpts from the build-log.
Or did anyone else solve this problem yet?
Greetz
Kutduzf
@Kutduzf and Brad Alexander.
Same error here on Gutsy:
couldn’t find library libfglrx_gamma.so.1
Please do post solution if you find one.
-Alexei
@Kutduzf and Brad Alexander,
Fixed! Apparently you need to have xorg-driver-fglrx package installed to build the *.deb files. The missing library(ies) are in that package. I installed the package using Synaptic and build succeeded.
Good luck!
@Alexei, Kutduzf and Brad Alexander
I think can make Envy modify ATI’s packaging scripts so as to solve this problem.
I’ll release a fix soon.
@albertomilone
That would be really great! Thanks in advance.
Kutduzf
Debian/lenny doesn’t have xorg-driver-fglrx.
@rkrisher
Lenny is not supported by Envy (only Etch is supported).
why is only Debian etch is supported and not Debian testing(lenny)?
Hi all,
I have a problem installing envy.
I run Debian etch, kernel 2.6.18-3-k7 .
When I start Envy, it says I miss the package dkms and, well, it is right. It says also that it is not possible to find the package dkms and it is right again, I don’t have it in my repositories. I have tried to download it from the dell repository http://linux.dell.com/projects.shtml but I could not find the right package for my kernel.
Someone can help? Thank you.
