envy 0.9.10-0ubuntu2 adds the support for the latest Nvidia driver and fixes a bug:
* Fixed: Envy stopped after the process in the virtual terminal ended.
* Added: Nvidia driver 169.09
* Removed: Nvidia driver 169.07
Here are the release highlights from Nvidia’s website:
* Fixed a problem causing the fan on some GPUs to always run at full speed.
* Fixed a bug that caused the X driver to crash if the X.Org GLX extension module was loaded intead of NVIDIA’s.
* Improved the X driver’s awareness of the current notebook docking status.
* Fixed brightness control on HP Compaq notebooks.
* Fixed a bug in the Linux/i2c algorithm driver implementation that prevented core transfer types from succeeding.

The latest driver 169.09 freezes the xserver with my geforce go 6200.
I reinstalled previus envy with the 169.07 nvidia’s driver.

I solved. The problem was due to a unofficial version of compiz i was using. Now is all ok.

All I get is a black screen, however it did not look to me like the new ATI driver installed the same way the nvidia driver’s do. I am used to installing nvidia drivers so I look to see the compiling going on and a bunch of scripts being run…..I did not see this with the ATI drivers, is that normal ? as you can see, I do not know enough about Linux( ubuntu 7.10) to provide any information details unless you can tell me where to look and what to details to provide. I should add that I have never had ATI work so I am not sure what to expect durning the install process, its just different than nvidia process and much shorter. my card is saphire ATI HD 2600 pro. I see on the web from google search that other people have the same problem so I do not believe its envy problem, more like ATI driver problem, but can you work around this ? Also, new envy works just great with new nvidia drivers 169.09 ! thanks !!

the installation process is different for the ATI driver.
Boot in recovery mode and type:
cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log /home/yourusername(replace yourusername with your username)
then type:
envy --uninstall-alland type:
rebooton next boot you’ll be able to send me the Xorg.0.log which you will find in your home folder.

I used Envy before on a standard Gutsy installation, but recently “upgraded” to Ubuntu Studio. After upgrading, xserver wouldn’t load stating it couldn’t load the NVIDIA driver. I reverted my xorg.conf using the “nv” driver. After that I could start xserver again and I used the newest Envy to install the NVIDIA driver again, but ran into the error ending with: “OSError: [Errno 21] Is a directory”. I tried to uninstall the driver (using Envy) and got the same error. Uninstalling Envy and reinstalling did not work. I think I first had to uninstall the driver before upgrading, but ofcourse I only thought of that after the upgrade… Is there any help for me? I would really like to use the Compiz stuff but also want to keep the RT-kernel for audio purposes.. Any help would great!

I upgraded recently to Kubuntu 8.04.
They only method to get my secondary screen’s resolution correct under 7.10, was through Envy.
When I try to install my drivers with Envy on 8.04, I get this ‘unsupported OS error’.
I read an article about tweaking Envy to run on future versions, but I don’t feel very confident doing so.
Do you plan a release soon with 8.0 support?

I’m not sure as to when I’ll be able to add the support for Ubuntu 8.04. The new Envy will require some system changes in Ubuntu.
I’ll make an announcement when Envy is ready.

I emailed you the xorg log you asked for. it seems to me that the problem might be that this is a newer release card and is not yet identified. I say that because I saw no mention of the card in the log, yet I did see a reference to firegl…which this card is NOT – its a Sapphire ATI HD 2600 Pro AGP. after I sent the email, I removed that card and installed an ATI 850 Pro AGP and had no display problems at all, even compiz worked fine with the new drivers ! first time ever had ati drivers installed and working ever ! the bad news is that the drivers seem to have a problem with googleearth acceleration, but I’m not sure thats your problem, it looks like a driver problem pure and simple.
Albert, do I need to uninstall my current driver before using the newest release. Right now I have the Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10 restricted driver installed.

I do not know if its an envy problem or not, but I cannot solve this problem…here is the results of a probe:

I cannot get fastwrites or SBA enabled no matter what I do….I have placed the following in the files as required:
/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-kernel-nkc
and
/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia
options nvidia_new NVreg_EnableAGPSBA=1 NVreg_EnableAGPFW=1
but they do not seem to do anything….it works in most all my computers, however I have 2 that I cannot get FW or SBA working, do you know what could be the problem ?
never mind, after 2 days of trying everything I could think of, I finally got it working, I removed the “_new” and like magic it worked. but that don’t explain why the other machines worked with the “_new”
I’m still waiting for advice on how to install the new driver properly using envy. Do I uninstall the ubuntu restricted driver first (if so how do I do that), or do I just install overtop of the old driver?

Truly, Envy is a great software. I was banging my head on the walls trying to figure out my display problems with 7.10. I couldn’t get the right resolution, AND, I didn’t have a cursor. Ran Envy and rebooted (and really I wasn’t expecting much, because I had high doubts that this was a driver problem) and it worked. You have truly saved another computer, and I’m sure there’s many more to come. I invite you to keep updating this truly great tool.

within 5 minutes I have my new Geforce 8500 working!!

I finally installed the drivers 169.09 on my amilo m1439g with a geforce go6600, but unfortunately my problem persists and fan goes at 100% all the time. I also tried to install LmSensors following the Wiki ubuntu. Have you some suggestions to help me?

My system gets blocked when I run any OpenGL application (glxgears, opengl games or screen savers). One of My CPUs gets up to 100% and I must then restart the computer. This happened to me using the older driver and I hoped that it would be solved with the 169.09 but its still the same.
I am using Ubuntu 7.10 64 bits on an AMD 5600 dual core.

Can I ask for an update on using compiz/custom appearance features? I infer that it is one or the other? Can I have both?
My previous post was poorly edited … The question is this… can I have dual displays and compiz 3D appearance effects? Dual head had proved impossible without Edgy, but dual head and compiz … is that possible?
How I installed the latest ATI driver (8.2) under Ubuntu 7.10 (32bit) using this Envy version (0.9.10-0ubuntu2).
Note: this worked for me but I do not promise anything so don’t blame me if it screws up your X!
1. Install the ATI driver 8.1 using Envy and make sure it works.
2. Download the 8.2 driver installer from AMD website.
3. Build the deb packages:
sudo sh ati-driver-installer-8-02-x86.x86_64.run –buildpkg Ubuntu/gutsy
4. Install the built deb packages:
sudo dpkg -i xorg-driver-fglrx_8.455.2-0*.deb fglrx-kernel-source_8.455.2-0*.deb fglrx-amdcccle_8.455.2-0*.deb
5. Reboot.

As Jack Kerouac asked, what about the new version of the nvidia drivers? OR much better … how about a simply editable config file stores the version numbers, so users can change them by hand .. or how about fetching the latest version number from nvidia.com ? But, beside this, I really can’t complain, absolute great work !

That driver is a beta release. I will support it but not in time for the release of EnvyNG 1.1.x.
EnvyNG 1.1.x. will get the version from a repository. I’ll blog more about this soon.
