Why doesn’t Envy support Feisty yet?

Well, there are 2 main reasons:

* The ATI driver (fglrx) is not compatible with Feisty’s kernel (2.6.20). For this reason Envy should use a patch. I’d rather wait for official support by ATI/AMD but if this doesn’t happen before Feisty’s release I will implement this feature in Envy. (This is not the main reason for delaying the support for Feisty).

* I read on the ubuntu-devel mailing list that Xorg 7.2 *might* be made available on Feisty. I haven’t tried the new Xorg yet and I would need some time to see the way it handles settings (e.g. if it doesn’t use a xorg.conf at all).

NOTE: I haven’t installed Feisty yet, therefore if you have any suggestion or what I wrote is not (entirely) correct, please do not hesitate to contact me.

  1. I think we will have a new AMD-graphical driver on 2007. Normally AMD-ATI put the new Windows driver and the new Linux driver on the same time on the web site. AMD will crate a new driver for the new card r600 for XP and Vista, I think we will have a new Linux driver and a new Mac driver at the same time.

  2. I tried Envy last night on my ThinkPad T41p. Two problems: 1. The screen flickered like crazy, and 2. I still had MESA OpenGL, so no OpenGL software would launch. So I’m back on the open source drivers.

The whole “we need binary drivers to get quality drivers” argument is a pile of crap. The ATI drivers are teh suck.

  3. Hmm. I’m running feisty:
    Linux tienel 2.6.20-8-lowlatency #2 SMP PREEMPT Tue Feb 13 05:21:37 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

And I have ‘restricted modules’ installed, and run fglrx on an ATI9800XT. fgl_glxgears gives me about 755FPS and shows up as plenty fast.

Of course there is a problem that with dual screen the opengl rendering is ‘halfway-off’ (window has to be twice the normal size for full image to show)

  4. loaded feisty on my legacy machine (6-year old Dell dimension 4100) and had not problems with my ATI graphics. Looking forward to the final build!

  5. Hello, I have a problem with Envy, when I start my computer my screen write “hors de portée”. I think in english it’s “Out of range”. I have an ACL (connect in DVI) Benq FP93GX. I think it’s because my screen can not support a bigger frequency than 75 hertz. How can I correct that?

  6. I have use envy to uninstall ati driver and I have restart. at that time I have no graphical, juste the text and I can not do any thing. I think I will format my computer and reinstall Kubuntu if I have no solution to this problem. Can you help me?

  7. hi
i ‘ve tried envy nut i can’t get the ATI driver has been installed…
after install envy, the resolution of initial screen was modified and then when i try to init a gnome session the screen keeps frozen…then i restart and i can’t work in X session no more until i come back to my old xorg.conf
i have a DELL inspiron 6400 with an ATI mobility radeon x1300
    thanks for the effort.
    bye

  8. pierluc:
did you change anything on your computer before you got that problem?

    samuel:
    1) does the Internet connection work in Ubuntu?
    2) can I see your /etc/apt/sources.list ?

  9. With the last version of speedtouch-ng I have no problems with my internet connection.

Can I use the auto-detection script of the Ubuntu installer to reconfigure automatically Xorg?

The installation with ebvy is very good, but I have a problem with ATI driver. I have the same problem with all installation technic. I think the problem is ATI driver do not detect corectly my screen and don’t configure correctly Xorg.

  10. ” I have the same problem with all installation technic.”

I don’t know if “technic” is the good word… installation guide?
Sorry, I’me not very good in english

  11. Any ideas when I will be able to use this on feisty?? It works prefect on Edgy! But I would love to move to feisty! Thanks for the great program!

  12. alberto, I have type ls -al /etc/X11/ and it give me that:
    xorg.conf
    xorg.conf-fglrx-0
    xorg.conf-fglrx-1
    xorg.conf.original-0
    xorg.conf_backup_200702251452
    xorg.conf_backup_200702251902

I think the xorg backup of envy is xorg.conf_backup_200702251452.

To use this backup I have type:
    xorg.conf_backup_200702251452

And it give me this error:
    cp cannot stat `xorg.conf_backup_200702251452
    No such file or directory

    What can I do?

  13. ok, I have do a mistake. it’s not /etc/x11 it’s /etc/X11

Can-you ad un links on your script for change the xorg.conf if it has a problem?

  14. Bon, I can go on kde but I don’t have the driver.

Ps.: I think it will be a good idea to delete this messge because it take a lot of space.

    the good xorg.conf:

    Section “Monitor”

    The bad:

I has two Section for “Monitor”, I think this is the bogue.

  18. Could you maybe write a script that uninstalls an Edgy “envy” driver install from a recently Feisty upgrade? It broked my xserver (which was easy to fix) but now Upgrade manager doest want to install nvidia-xgl

think this problem will become more prevalent as ppl start upgrading

  19. New ati drivers 8.36 supports kernel 2.6.20 and then they are supposed to work on feisty….but actually envy only installs 8.35 ati drivers therefore actual envy version doesn’t support feisy even if it could…fix it please!
