Today my NVIDIA card passed away…

Today my GeForce FX 5500 died…

Good news: I popped in my ATI 1600, kindly donated by Jeff (which I used on my old testing box) a few months ago, and now I can use my computer again.

Bad news: I won’t be able to work on Envy for Nvidia cards :-/ … just when Envy’s support for Feisty was almost complete…

  1. Damn! But you will get an nVidia – using ATi under linux (especially the X1x00 ones) sucks really bad. I recommend a 7600GT 🙂

  2. I read this entry off planetubuntu…so I don’t know your blog or how much work you do on the project…but if you think it’s necessary to get work done on ubuntu packages I wouldn’t mind buying you another 5500 card off ebay. Would it help?

  3. Too bad about your nvidia card. So maybe the community can chip in to donate one to you(i would sure chip in). Or maybe you can tell us what is still pending for envy on nvidia cards and maybe we can contribute technically.
I’ve used it before, and it was really nice. It takes away some of the chores that i had to do manually.

  4. Upgraded to Envy 0.9.1 some minutes ago…. it works like a breeze!
You did a tremendous job! I am “envy”-ing your coding skills 😉

    Keep up the good work!

P.S: Sorry to hear your gfx 5500 died. I hope you get a new nvidia card soon. Perhaps we (the users) could donate some money or contribute an old nvidia card to you… shouldn’t be the biggest problem huh? …would be a shame if you couldn’t do the feisty version of envy for nvidia :/

  5. Damn! My nvidia card died time ago too, i’m going to buy another soon. If you have an amazon’s wishlist post it here and maybe someone here could buy you another FX5500 just for the community’s sake 🙂

  6. you gotta get another nvidia. since (time+tech) is compounding exponentially they ain’t that pricey! (*-[####]-*)

  7. I have use your prg on an old computer of me and it works verry good, but with my new computer it wont its a ati xpress 200
Maybe you can fix the problem with the ati drivers under ubuntu dapper drake?
its the only good working distro for music making people.
edgy had a verry bad latenci.
i hope so, i cant use it now with xgl support.

but i hope you get soon a new nvidia board.

  8. auburn, Alaa and all the ones who wish to help me:
There’s no need for one person alone to buy me a card. If you want to contribute you can help me via Paypal on this page (the button is on the right side of the page):

    Karl Lattimer:
I really appreciate your offer but I need a card of at least series 5xxx otherwise I won’t be able to test the latest driver

  9. I have a 6800GT for AGP bus.

But I don’t know if I can send you, because I am in France.

Please contact me by mail for getting more details.

  10. You can Tell Nvidia and ask for a free card. You work on ther driver for no money, it’s normal for Nvidia to help you.

I don’t know if you understand, my english look like the French of google Tradutor 😆

  11. Damn! Rest In Peace You sweet nvidia 5500.

Well let’s do one thing folks. If 10 people (Yes, not necessarily more than 10 people and these ’10 lucky people’ would be required to forget about drinking coffee for 5 days only, and you know that caffeine is so bad for your health, don’t ya? :-D) send Alberto 5 US dollars via pay-pal then I believe he would certainly be able to purchase this card. take a look –>

As soon as you all agree with this idea and give it a ‘go-ahead’ signal, we can send money to alberto’s pay pal account and thus help him build another superb update for Feisty Fawn. I’m sending my 5 dollars anyways wheather or not you agree. Good luck folks.

  12. By the way that day i chose to install latest drivers for my edgy using envy’s graphical interface but after it finished installation it asked me wheather or not i would like to configure x server automatically and i said yes and then it said “you wanna start x?” i said yes and then x failed to load. nvidia’s recovery screen came up and showed why x failed and what’s the reason etc etc but i restarted and next time it didn’t fail and now i’m using the latest drivers. alberto can you tell me why it failed to load first and why it didn’t fail when i rebooted? thanks keep up good work man! 😀

  13. Hi, I do have a spare MSI Nvidia FX 5900 XT to spare if you want it. It is not new but I should still work fine. Leave me a message on Ubuntuforums, my nick is GIFRATE.
