Envy 0.9.2 UNSTABLE is now available

I haven’t got neither the time nor the hardware to test Envy but seen the number of requests I’m receiving I have decided to release an unstable version of Envy so that you can help me test what will become a stable release.

Here are all the changes as reported in the changelog:
* Added: support for Ubuntu Feisty
* Added: support for kernel 2.6.20
* Added: ATI driver 8.35.5
* Removed: ATI driver 8.34.8
* Changed: dpkg-dev added as a dependency
* Added: Mesa is restored after the ATI driver is uninstalled (thus avoiding to break dri in the
open source driver “ati”
* Changed: nvidia-glx-dev is no longer installed by default
* Added: 2 additional IDs for Geforce 6150GO cards (0244, 03d1) in the compatibility list

You can download it here as usual

Please, let me know if it works for you.

  1. thousands thanks et 1000 merci . never met a so simple way to repair
Xserver when broken (new kernel) . vraiment sympa quand on se retrouve devant un Γ©cran noir .( et hop ! envy !). this version works on edgy with GForce4 MX440 . i was just waiting for envy to upgrade to feisty . good work ! sakramh

  2. Hello Alberto,
I’m using Ubuntu feisty and I had a problem with ubuntu’s “nvidia-glx-new” which i need since i have a Nvidia Geforce 8800 graphics card. When X tried to start it complained about a missing “wfb” module and did not come up with gdm.
So i uninstalled the “nvidia-glx-new” package by synaptic using the “complete remove” option and tried it with the new version of envy. But after the installation and a reboot i get the same message when X tries to come up:
EE: Failed to load module “wfb” (module does not exist,0)
EE: NVIDIA(0): Need libwfb but wfbScreenInit not found

  3. Works on a Ati Radeon 9600 Mobility. My resolution was set to 1024×768. After installation and first reboot GDM was set to 1400×1050 and normal session was set to 1024×768 which implied I had to take another step to make it work at 1400×1050. Restricted Driver Manager now says that I’m using an ATI Controller but the “Active” column has no checkbox mark.

    Congratulations on your work!

  4. da steg:
Uninstall the Nvidia driver from Envy and then install the driver and reboot.

If you get the same error I will need to see your /var/log/Xorg.0.log

  5. now that the new 8.36 driver is out for ati that supports the 2.6.20 kernel without a patch, maybe that one should be included in your package instead.

  6. Hi
Works fine on “GeForce FX 5600 Ultra” when I installed it this way:

    sudo envy -g

And also did’nt want to try anything else than…

    sudo nvidia-settings

I am impressed this is the shit I wanted!

  7. Do you have any support for VIA IGP graphics (openchrome)?

I know that it’s not the best graphics option, but I support some computers that use it.

  8. Works perfectly for me – using GeForce Go 6800 on a Dell Inspiron 9300 with Feisty. Thanks for all the hard work!

  9. sei un grande, non c’Γ¨ altro da dire^^
funziona tutto alla perfezione e al primo colpo πŸ˜› (strano x me xke non sono 1 genio :P)
    complimentoni!

  10. does anyone know if the ati radeon 9800 pro is compatible with the release version of Ubuntu, and the unstable release version of Envy?

I have still been unable to get out of software 3d rendering. I’ve tried it on a fresh install of Ubuntu, and still no luck.

Is there something I have to do after installing Envy and rebooting?

  12. Worked for me on a Dell GX150 with GeForce 2mx.

Ubuntu 6.10 to 7.04 update broke the display of course.

This is a very serious design flaw with Linux and X. Every major update I get breaks the display. I honestly wanted to smash the thing (again!).

Without Envy, I wouldn’t be running Linux any more.

  13. Ubuntu Feisty Faun with an Nvidia 6600GT – Absolutely no problems here. Ubuntu’s upgrade screwed up the Nvidia install, but when I got the “unstable” version of Envy it ran without a hitch, and I can get the accelerated functions without any problem.

    Class bit of scripting πŸ™‚

  14. lol, i just went to nvidia’s website today, and it reads “Green with Envy”. funny. i thought you outta know…
    thanks for the greatwork btw.
as far as your hardware is concerned, i have a spare geforce 5200 or 5500 AGP (don’t remember exactly), let me know if you’re interested, i’d be glad to send it to you.
    greetz

  15. thanks, it worked perfect the first time on my laptop,
    with geforce go 6100.

why the 6.10 to 7.04 update mess the system so much???
ubuntu should include envy, i think.

  16. Alberto,

Thanks again, installed Envy on Fiesty, works flawlessly, had to install build-essential as Fiesty doesn’t come with it default, Envy installed nvidia Legacy on my PC, asked for permission to modify xconfig and asked me to restart, nvidia works, glxgears work and I thank you from my heart, without it, there would be no Fiesty on my PC.

  17. does not work on Festy with 6600GT and latest driver(9775 if im not mistaken) from Envy, needed to Uninstall Envy using textual interface.

Error given was something about Xorg version not compatible with Nvidia driver version or something similar.

  18. Thanks Albert, works perfect so far

    fresh installed Feisty
    7800 (GT i think)

is there anything in particular you need us to do besides seeing if it installs and has basic function?

  19. By the way I first installed Ubuntu Edgy Eft, then used Envy to install the drivers but recently upgraded to Feisty Fawn and didn’t need Envy to install anything. Everything seemed to be installed and upgraded automatically. Should I go ahead and install the beta Envy for Feisty even though nothing’s broke in my system apart from the fact that Ubuntu’s update manager says that it has a newer version of Nvidia drivers but can’t install it due to a package conflict? Anyways it aint no big deal really. But I would certainly be waiting for a stable version for Feisty.

P.S. That day just outta curiosity I launched Edgy’s Envy on Feisty and tried to install the drivers but it said that my OS wasn’t supported. Such a detection method is awesome. Thanks Alberto! I really liked Envy’s security.

    ciao grazie

  21. Hmm. the captcha word was “win”, now how about that ^^
Just wanted to say thanks for making envy, finally I got my 4800 running in feisty.
    You rock πŸ˜‰

  22. Chears!
I own a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100 with a nvidia 420 Go and have been working all day on it, I can’t get it to work.
    Sorry, it just doesn’t work.
On Ubuntu 6.10 it worked fine (with Beryl)
on Ubuntu 7.04 (2.6.20) it does NOT work.
    Any help is highly appreciated.
I must say, the script really looks nice! congrat with that.

  23. Hi alberto,
I have downloaded, installed en tested. As I expected: Your script works like a charme.
The X11 does not start, so I copied the Xorg.0.log file and set the xorg.conf to use the “nv”-driver. At least I have some screens that way.
Here is the content of the log (for the “nvidia” installed)

Thank you very much for your help!

  24. Great work, has always helped me in the past with NVidia cards, so thanks a million for all that! However I now have a new ATI x1950 512MB AGP card and tried the unstable Envy release from 23/04/07 and it doesn’t work – it installs the driver OK, but I can’t find a way to enable 3D acceleration, then when I reboot my machine I get the blue screen of death and “Unable to start xserver…” (Using Fiesty 7.04 by the way!)

  25. Hi Alberto,
I have been trying all evening now (again πŸ™‚
Even done a complete new setup (dpkg -a)
then done a complete setup with envy and followed instructions (7) as you suggested.
    Still no success.

Any suggestion is highly appreciated, have I overlooked anything?
On the 6.10 version it all worked fine, even the beryl-manager worked like a charm, the new Ubuntu just does not know how to get the screen up and going.
Should I, as a last resort, re-install from scratch?
    That would be a pitty.

  26. Hi there Alberto,

Thanks for your reply. I’m just done a fresh install of Fiesty and then installed envy_0.9.2-0ubuntu4_all.deb, here is my /var/log/envy-installer.log:

  27. Hi again Alberto,
OK, first thing, please accept my apologies for my previous post being so long – if you need the missing bit off the end, please let me know and I’ll post it up again!
I’ve tried another re-install of Fiesty and then Envy, and since then I don’t get the blue screen of death and “failed to start xserver” message when I reboot. However – 3D acceleration still won’t work. Here is the output from my cat /var/log/envy-installer.log :

    ian@COOLERMASTER:~$ /var/log/Xorg.0.log

  29. itsjustarumour:
let’s try to diagnose the error:

Boot with the “ati” driver in your xorg.conf

Then (after Ubuntu has booted) Set the driver to “fglrx” in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    Log out and Press CTRL+ALT+F1

You will get to the command line (no GUI)
    Type:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop (if you use GDM)
    OR
sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop (if you use KDM)

    Then:
    startx — -verbose 5 -logverbose 5

You will see several lines with the same error.

Then if you can’t get to the command line press CTRL+ALT+F1 or CTRL+C (select NO if it asks you if you want to see the output of the error or something like that)

Then type this in order to copy the output of the error to your home folder:
    sudo cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log /home/your_username/Xorg.0.log
(Of course you have to replace “your_username” with your username)

Access the GNOME or KDE again in the following way:
    sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Set the driver back to “ati” instead of “fglrx”
    CTRL+O to save
    CTRL+X to exit

    Then
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart (if you use GDM)
    OR
sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart (if you use KDM)

Post the content of that file (which you can find under /home/your_username/Xorg.0.log )

  30. Hi again Alberto!

OK, heres the results of my latest investigations! (Btw – if you would rather I did not clog up your blog with long posts, please contact me and I’ll email them to you)

I’ve done another fresh Fiesty install and then run envy-0.9.2-0ubuntu5_all.deb Before I answer your questions, I have noticed something odd. Heres my Xorg.conf, after installing and running Envy:

    # /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
    #
    # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
    # values from the debconf database.
    #
    # Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf(5) manual page.
    # (Type “man xorg.conf” at the shell prompt.)
    #
    # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
    # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
    # package.
    #
    # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
    # again, run the following command:
    # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

  31. So – thats was my Xorg.conf. Looking trough it, I see this bit:

    Section “Device”
    Identifier “Generic Video Card”
    Driver “vesa”
    BusID “PCI:1:0:0”
    EndSection

    Section “Device”
    Identifier “aticonfig-Device[0]”
    Driver “fglrx”
    EndSection

I’m afraid I’m not very technical with these things (yet!), but to me this looks like there are two entries for graphics card drivers.

So – my question is – should I delete one of these netries? Which one? Or should I just change them both to “ATI”? et me know and I’ll follow the rest of your instructions!

    Best Wishes,
    Ian (itsjustarumour)

  32. PS- just one more thought:

    Section β€œDevice”
    Identifier β€œGeneric Video Card”
    Driver β€œvesa”
    BusID β€œPCI:1:0:0β€³
    EndSection

Does the “PCI” bit mean that it thinks I have a PCI-E graphics card? Because its not, its AGP!
