I have updated both the unstable and the stable release to 0.9.4-0ubuntu5 and 0.9.3-0ubuntu6 respectively.
Here is the changelog:
* Fixed: there was a problem with depmod
* Fixed: the installation of the ATI driver on Etch failed because the system was not
detected as Debian
You can get them here
Hi, a couple of days ago I used envy on my girlfriend’s Toshiba laptop, and although the installation worked, she was limited to 800×600 resolution, no matter what I tried.
Eventually I came across a solution: http://www.edwiget.name/content/view/144/26/
Perhaps you can include a similar fix with envy for Geforce Go cards?
Hi Alberto,
link for envy_0.9.4-0ubuntu5_all.deb is broken.
It seems to work fine now.
Hi Alberto thx for the greayt envy,
i have ATI radeon 9550 my question is:
why opengl isn`t working?
3D support look fine
Regards
Christopher
KP:
can you post the output of this command?

CIAO!
I just installed and ran Envy to hopefully bump up the resolution on my Ubuntu (Dapper) installation with an nVidia GeForce 6200LE card. I let it overwrite the .conf file as recommended. Now XWindows won’t even start.
I’m used to software just not working on Linux. But breaking my system is another matter. Thanks heaps in advance for all the time I’m going to waste trying to fix the mess you made.
noob:
First of all you tried Envy at your own risk, therefore YOU made the mess.
Envy makes a backup of your xorg.conf.
Boot in Recovery mode and type:
ls /etc/X11/
you will see something like this:
xorg.conf
xorg.conf_backup_200702271039
the file with the “backup” word is the one you’re looking for.
type:
sudo cp xorg.conf_backup_200702271039 xorg.conf
and type this to restart your computer:
reboot
That’s all.
Mr. Milone:
First off, I will apologize for barking at you–but not for being angry.
You are absolutely correct, using Envy was at my own risk. But when the Envy utility is recommended on the Ubuntu forums themselves (by some of the more experienced members), one expects a higher standard than some hobbiest website or cobwebbed SourceForge project. Lesson learned–the hard way, as usual…
Honestly, I really do appreciate the advice on restoring backup–and especially the fact that Envy takes the trouble to back the file up in the first place.
Alas, because I am apparently too stupid to use Ubuntu, I will be switching to a more commercially supported distro. of Linux. Thanks for making it easier for me to rescue my data from that box to move to something else. That saved a big chunk of the day for me.
noob:
You should have read this thread which explains the official stance of ubuntuforums.org on installation scripts:
http://ubuntuforums.org/announcement.php?f=13
Actually Ubuntu IS commercially supported:

Just tried Envy on Kubuntu. It installs the driver, but I’m still left using Mesa for 3D:
$ fglrxinfo
Xlib: extension “XFree86-DRI” missing on display “:0.0”.
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: http://www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.4 (1.5 Mesa 6.5.2)
mathew:
Post your /var/log/envy-installer.log
and type:
sudo depmod -ae
and reboot
I went through the debugging info on the ATI wiki and managed to get it working. A depmod, a symbolic link, and a couple of reboots. I’m not sure exactly which was the critical thing, though.
I just LOVE the ENVY script. That’s all.
Keep up the good Work Alberto 🙂
Success with 0.9.4-0ubuntu6 unstable on Acer Aspire 9303WSMi AMD64 TL-52 Nividia GeForce Go 7300 and am running 1280×768 on 17inch Laptop. Model says Seiko (DFP-0)though it’s Acer.
I tried with the stable first and got X screen only, but had had problems before. 0.9.4 worked great!
Thanks! Wanted to donate, but couldn’t find Great Britain or UK in the paypal scroll list and I can’t read Italian. Alan.
Just turned it up to 1440×900 Still good!
Alan.
Forgot to say, using Feisty.
Alan:
now my donations page defaults to UK
ciao
Alberto, Thanks for the UK default paypal ammendment.
Envy is great. Is it possible to also make it work in my other installation which has Kubuntu with the KDE desktop?
Alan:
install Envy and type: sudo apt-get install -f
then Envy will run on Kubuntu.
…but the ATI driver is still buggy as hell and causes random lockups, so I’m going back to the open source driver. At least that actually works.
re Envy with Kubuntu No, sorry, just doesn’t work on my kubuntu installation. Something about a conflict with another Nvidia driver. Maybe because I had earlier downloaded latest driver from Nvidia and tried to install it and run into problems with X. Spent too much time already, too complicated for me as a new user with limited time available. Think Ill load XP, play with Ubuntu and forget about Kubuntu for a few months. Thanks, Alan.
Alan:
yes, it was your previous attempt that caused Envy’s failure.
Have a look at Point B of the FAQ:
http://albertomilone.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php?n=Main.Envy-InstructionsForUbuntu
I spent days on screen resolution problem with nvidia. Envy script works great but rebooting kills the effect. I had the right nvidia driver installed and it worked well with hibernate, but after rebooting nvidia settings showed resolution “Auto” again with no options to change it.
Any patches available?
Thanks.
@Alex
type:
sudo nvidia-xconfig
and set the resolution (then save your settings)
or try point 15 of the Problems Section of my guide:
http://www.albertomilone.com/latest_nvidia_udsf_feisty.html#PROBLEMS_SECTION
I used point 15 recommendation already, and I tried nvidia-xconfig, it works but only until next reboot/poweroff.
Thank you anyway.
I’ve used Envy on 5 different PCs without a problem. Thank you for this time saving script. 🙂
