The envy install appears to go ahead flawlessly, but after the recommended reboot the xserver fails to start. Opening a terminal and executing startx I get:
ERROR: API mismatch: this NVIDIA driver component has version 100.14.03 but the NVIDIA kernel module’s version does not match.
The appropriate part of the Xorg log is:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module! Please ensure
(EE) NVIDIA(0): that there is a supported NVIDIA GPU in this system, and
(EE) NVIDIA(0): that the NVIDIA device files have been created properly.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Please consult the NVIDIA README for details.

Back on the nv driver now. Please let me know if any more information is required.

in Envy 0.9.4-0ubuntu2 i first tried to install nvidia driver automaticly but it can’t detect my gfx 8500gt then i tried it manually but it does not install the driver because nvidia-kernel-common bug
okay next day (new installed ubuntu 7.04)i tried Envy 0.9.4-0ubuntu3 now the manual install works but then came the error msg that “DannyW” posted
Ok, let’s try to diagnose the error:
Boot with the “nv” driver in your xorg.conf
Then (after Ubuntu has booted) Set the driver to “nvidia” in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Log out and Press CTRL+ALT+F1
You will get to the command line (no GUI)
Type:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop (if you use GDM)
OR
sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop (if you use KDM)
Then:
startx — -verbose 5 -logverbose 5
You will see several lines with the same error.
Then if you can’t get to the command line press CTRL+ALT+F1 or CTRL+C (select NO if it asks you if you want to see the output of the error or something like that)
Then type this in order to copy the output of the error to your home folder:
sudo cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log /home/your_username/Xorg.0.log
(Of course you have to replace “your_username” with your username)
Access the GNOME or KDE again in the following way:
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Set the driver back to “nv” instead of “nvidia”
CTRL+O to save
CTRL+X to exit
Then
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart (if you use GDM)
OR
sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart (if you use KDM)
Post the content of that file (which you can find under /home/your_username/Xorg.0.log )
This problem no longer occurs with the latest version: 0.9.3-0ubuntu4.

Hello Alberto, I have to thank you for the Envy.
I have the same problem:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module!
I typed both commands
lsmod | grep nvidia
sudo depmod -a
and it worked fine, but when I restarted the computer I can only obtain a black screen. I’m now in recovery mode and whith nv driver. Do you know the way to solve it? I would thank you your help so much.
Manuel:
1) post your /var/log/envy-installer.log
2) Boot with the “nv” driver in your xorg.conf
Then (after Ubuntu has booted) Set the driver to “nvidia” in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Log out and Press CTRL+ALT+F1
You will get to the command line (no GUI)
Type:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop (if you use GDM)
OR
sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop (if you use KDM)
Then:
startx — -verbose 5 -logverbose 5
You will see several lines with the same error.
Then if you can’t get to the command line press CTRL+ALT+F1 or CTRL+C (select NO if it asks you if you want to see the output of the error or something like that)
Then type this in order to copy the output of the error to your home folder:
sudo cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log /home/your_username/Xorg.0.log
(Of course you have to replace “your_username” with your username)
Access the GNOME or KDE again in the following way:
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Set the driver back to “nv” instead of “nvidia”
CTRL+O to save
CTRL+X to exit
Then
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart (if you use GDM)
OR
sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart (if you use KDM)
Post the content of that file (which you can find under /home/your_username/Xorg.0.log )
I have more information. I have the original xorg.conf file, using nv (ranamed as xorg.conf.backup) and the xorg.conf file after Envy (and a copy called xorg.conf.backup.backup). If I use this last one, it crashes after reboot. If I use the first one (the nv one), it boots correctly, I make
ctrl + alt + F1
sudo -s
/etc/init.d/gdm stop
cp -p /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup.backup /etc/X11/xorg.conf
/ec/init.d/gdm start
it works fine. Do you know the reason I should boot with the nv’s xorg.conf file and then change it to the nvidia’s one? Thanks a lot.

I can’t see what’s causing your problem in those logs.
I think you should ask Nvidia developers about your problem and I’m sure that your feedback will be useful to the development of Nvidia’s new driver.

Just so you are aware, I believe there is a bug in the Envy Unstable script.
I troubleshot the API mismatch for about 2 hours with the help of a forum user that goes by the screen name psyke83 or somethign very similar to that. HE was helping me thru gaim (IM).
He tried to have me add blacklist nvidia_new to the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist file, BUT that still didn’t work, NO module was loading when we tried that and that fix DID work for psyke83 so we weren’t sure why it didn’t work on my machine? I also ensure that my /etc/defaults/linux-blah-blah-blah-common DID have the Disabled MOdules = “nv” within it and it STILL DIDN’T WORKL.
It turned out that the Envy unstable program had a bug and didn’t do somethign correctly (if this is an untrue statement, I am only conveying the message that psyke83 informed me of. He said that he tried telling the author of Envy but the author of Envy said there was no bug. Then psyke83 even tried the unstable version on his own computer and tried to install 100.xx.xx and he got the same API mismatch error).
So the soltuion was to add a hack to my rc.local file so that the correct nvidia kernel module would load. This is what I added BEFORE the exit 0 within the rc.local file:
find /lib/modules/`uname -r` | grep -i nvi | grep -v fb | grep nvidia.ko$ | xargs insmod
and finally the damn 100.xx.xx kernel module would load. BUT to no avail, random freezing is STILL OCCURING!!!! I have posted a million times in various threads about Fiesty freezing on simple tasks, like gedit, or various config dialog boxes opened thru System, Admin or Prefs. ANyway, I thoguht I’d at least let other know about the solution if they get teh dreaded API mismatch error when the nvidia driver is 100.xx.xx but the module being loaded was 9755 when they used Envy Unstable.

After buying a 8500GT Sonic card i have also found myself in this situation. After reinstalling ubuntu 7.04 from scratch i have the same error that has previously been mentioned:
ERROR: API mismatch: this NVIDIA driver component has version 100.14.03 but the NVIDIA kernel module’s version does not match.
The appropriate part of the Xorg log is:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module! Please ensure
(EE) NVIDIA(0): that there is a supported NVIDIA GPU in this system, and
(EE) NVIDIA(0): that the NVIDIA device files have been created properly.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Please consult the NVIDIA README for details.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
I have tried all suggestions provided and none seem to get the driver loaded. All i get is the above crash message.
I can provide you with the debug information if you would like it. It is very strange as i managed to get it working in edgy using envy before installed feisty from the live cd.

sudo depmod -a
and restart the Xserver (or your computer)
I have tried typing depmod -a and then restarting (both x directly and the whole computer). The same error displays both times.

Looking at the detailed log, i see this one…
Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module! Please ensure that there is a supported NVIDIA GPU in this system
I am trying to upgrade the driver from the 1.0.9755 version to the 100.14.9 version.
I follow the same steps for both drivers, the older one works, the newer one does not.
Its not specific to your Envy script either.
